Craft and Jams

Jam Makers of Carrington

The original jam maker, a resident of Carrington Village, began making her wonderful products in 1982 when the first kiosk was opened in Paling Court Hostel. The range of products has since expanded and now includes jam of all kinds, marmalades of various combinations, relishes, and pickles. A particular favourite is the lemon butter which sells out almost as soon as it is made. This wonderful lady, now in her 90's, still produces an enormous number of jams and conserves all year round. The products are sold in the kiosks, and at the annual Fair in August. A couple of other of residents also make jams and pickles for Carrington Fair, with overall proceeds exceeding $2,000 each year.

Craft at Carrington

There have always been wonderful craft makers at Carrington, but in 1994 when the Village expanded, a group of ladies formed an organised craft group to help newcomers feel at home, and give them a sense of belonging. Morning tea is served, and craft items are discussed and a general get-together of women with similar interest is encouraged.

The skills employed include superb knitting, crocheting and cross-stitching and items such as innovative craft pieces, soft toys and clothing are produced. A sewing service is also provided to hostel residents by one of the members.

Items produced are sold through the kiosk. A major craft stall is run at the Carrington Fair each year, and is one of the most popular stalls we have, with hundreds of items for sale. Money raised through this work is well over $3,500 per annum. The group also loves to help out by selling items for special fundraising events - for one such fundraising event the Village residents knitted 400 trauma teddies in six weeks for the Red Cross.
