Second-Hand Clothing White Elephant and Books
Second Hand Clothing and White Elephant began together in 1982 with the first Fair, but have since grown and are now run seperately. Mini sales are organized throughout the year, almost monthly, and the proceeds are added to the final total for the Fair.
Pre-Loved Clothing
Donations of second-hand clothing are received all year round, then sorted and stored for sale on Fair Day. Takings over a year exceed $2,000. This is a very time consuming job, cheerfully co-ordinated by one of the residents and her team.
White Elephant
Again, donations are received all year, prior to the Fair in August. Items are sorted, marked for sale and stored. This is a real favourite at the Fair, and items can be bought at a very reasonable price. Items are also donated to the hostels as needed throughout the year, to assist with residents' needs. Some old glassware is given to the glass painters and sold through their stall also. White Elephant is a huge task, and is co-ordinated very efficiently and cheerfully by a Village resident with help from her family and a dedicated team of fellow residents. After the Fair, all left over items are donated to a local charity. Recipient charities include the Salvation Army, Lifeline and St. Vincent de Paul
Pre-Owned Books
Books are donated and collected all year round to be sold at the annual Fair. Up to 150 boxes of books are donated every year, which then have to be sorted, labelled and categorised. Book prices range from 10c to $5. A huge selection is available, and the book stall is always very busy on Fair day. A resident co-ordinates the group very efficiently, and she and her dedicated band of workers spend many hours in preparation throughout the year. Approximately $3,000 is generated annually through this valuable fundraising activity.
