I have been a pharmacist for 50 years and my wife is a geriatric trained nursing sister with 25 years experience.

We read with concern the recent articles concerning patient care at Carrington Nursing Home. Unfortunately it's very easy when we read of incidents to assume standards must be dropping. We can assure your readers that the standards at Carrington are exceptional despite the reported incidents.

It's only a few weeks ago I wrote to senior management and nursing staff congratulating them on the level of care they gave to my deceased mother. My mother, aged 95, a severe dementia patient, had been at Carrington for the last two years. During that time she had numerous falls, from chairs, out of bed and collisions with other patients, physical and verbal attacks on other patients, etc, despite the constant attention of the nursing staff.

I checked each case, no neglect, just sheer bad luck and the problems of nursing a difficult dementia patient.

What impressed me and my wife was the level of attention from all levels of nursing staff and the doctors at Carrington.

My wife and I agree that when our time comes we want our family to move us into Carrington. We have not seen a better place.

I feel I must reply in answer to the continued adverse reporting that has been emanating from the Camden Advertiser over the past several weeks.

My wife and I moved into Carrington in 1993 the need being that I had a severely handicapped partner following brain surgery in 1979. I knew that it was inevitable that a nursing home facility would be an absolute necessity in the longer term when I'd be no longer capable of caring for my partner.

Thus assured my wife spent the last years of her life in Parry House until her passing in 2002.

I know we could all find faults in the care provided in any institution caring for our aging population. The point being that nowhere could we afford one on one care. The ideal situations are never likely to exist. The staff of the facilities are dedicated people but in all fairness cannot be in more than one place at a time and there are occasions when this is an inevitable problem.

I would suggest a better effort in researching such problems before a journalist jumps on a band wagon on an ego trip. The media on occasion do tend to sensationalise situations beyond a fair assessment.

I thank my lucky stars that I'm a resident of Carrington and have great affection for staff members and respect them greatly for their dedication to our well being.

This is our home and the majority of us consider we are an important part of the Camden community and try to contribute to the well being and prosperity of this lovely place.

I am trying not to be too critical but would appreciate a balanced, unbiased assessment of the situation as we residents see it.

  • Official Opening of Grasmere Terrace Aged Care Facility

    29 April, 2009

Carrington Centennial Care celebrated the official opening of its newest state of the art aged care facility, Grasmere Terrace, on Monday 20 April 2009

Grasmere Terrace is a 100 bed facility comprising 70 Low Care Suites and 30 High Care Suites built in a modern environment with quality inclusions and facilities to meet the demand of residents.

Grasmere Terrace is the realisation of a vision developed a few years ago when Carrington commenced the journey of growth and expansion of services to the aged.  This was a very positive decision by the Board and has set the scene for Carrington to map out a new determination in pursuit of excellence in the delivery of Aged Care Services in Macarthur and Sydney South West.

The new facility was officially opened by Her Excellency, the Governor of New South Wales, Professor Marie bashire, before a huge gathering which included members of State and Federal Parliaments, Councillors from both Camden and Wollondilly Councils and members of the local community.
